Latin I

The study of Latin has long been an essential component of a robust education. Its highly regular grammar system makes it the easiest classical language to master, while at the same time improving the student’s logical thinking skills and mastery of English grammar and vocabulary. In Latin I we will cover approximately half of the Kraken Latin I text, learning some of the basics of Latin grammar as well as a substantial amount of vocabulary. The remainder of the basics of Latin grammar will be covered in Latin II. While memory work is essential to the study of any language, the emphasis of this course is to learn the structure of Latin so that students can come to an understanding of how the language works and eventually be able to translate and read the Vulgate and Roman authors. From lesson one, we will memorize vocab, work through grammar concepts, translate, and read engaging stories in Latin.

The History of Ideas: Christian Worldview and the Modern West

The concept of worldview is fundamental to our identity as humans and as Christians. It influences all of our decisions and values, translates them into real-world actions, and sets the trajectory for patterns of behaviour. Every instance and every aspect of human experience is filtered through a set of beliefs, assumptions, and commitments that make up our worldview. This course introduces students to the concept of worldview, explores the historical development of worldview in Western civilization, and considers the meaning and application of a reformed, Christian worldview to key elements of culture, including science, art, education, and human identity.
*Please Note: This course is delivered in two six-week parts.
